The lockdown did one thing for many of us – it got us thinking about working for ourselves. We explored side hustles and gigs, home bakeries, writing, drop shipping, crypto, digital marketing… we stepped into the freelance zone.
Fast forward to 2023, the rise of entrepreneurialism against the backdrop of the Great Resignation is still prevalent – here in the UAE and across several parts of the world. Freelancers and solopreneurs are choosing greater freedom and work-life balance – think work-from-home (WFH) model – and opting out of old-fashioned ideas like having a boss!
The only way to do great work is to love what you do.

Starting your own freelance business is an exciting, rewarding journey. Depending on your professional background, it can get daunting. You’ve got to think about a lot of things all at once from branding, business planning, developing your services, worrying about cash-flow, and marketing your services, and designing and developing your website.
Here are a few things to keep in mind
- Do your research. Educate yourself on the freelance industry, including the services you’ll offer, trends in the industry, and what your competition is doing.
- Put together a portfolio. As a freelancer, your portfolio is often the first impression you’ll make on potential clients. Make sure it’s up-to-date, attractive, and showcases your best work. If you need help, get in touch with a creative writer or a content writing specialist.
- Think about branding services from your logo and visual identity to the entire client journey. How do you want to present your brand to the target audience? How do you want to sound and look? Do you need a branding agency?
- Create a website. Having your own website is a great way to market your services and reach potential clients. Make sure it’s professional, well-designed, and easy to navigate. In fact, we launched our all-inclusive Content-first Website Packages keeping freelancers and solopreneurs in mind.
- Build your network. Use social media and professional networks to connect with potential clients, partners, and mentors.
- Stay organized. Freelancing can be overwhelming, so make sure to keep track of your finances, contracts, and other documents.
Nothing will work unless you do.
